Discover the Arboretum

by Austin Springs Staff on May 19, 2013

Cox2If you haven’t stopped by Cox Arboretum, a Five Rivers Metro Park just down the street from Austin Springs, you are missing one of the best hidden gems in Dayton. It is easily my favorite place to go when I have an extra hour or so. The 189 acre park is perfect for a lunch break outdoors, or a brisk walk in the woods. It is a great place to escape for awhile, I can’t tell you how many times I went there feeling stressed out and left feeling relaxed and renewed.

My favorite part of the park are the walking trails through the woods. There are several different trails, depending on how far you want to walk and how strenuous you want your walk to be. I love the yellow trail, which is the longest but takes you all through the woods, over creeks and bridges. It is so peaceful, you almost forget where you are! I have also run into a few deer on the trails as I was walking…beautiful!

CoxBest of all, there is a lot to see and do at the park and it’s all FREE! Here are just a few amenities:

Water Garden – Enjoy the serenity of a water garden landscaped with a mix of water-loving plants, perinnial and shrub borders and seasonal displays.

Butterfly House – Opens July 7th! Children and adults and view native butterflies in all stages of metamorphosis. Open Mon-Sat 10-4 and Sun 12-4. Weather dependent.

Bell Children’s Maze – Children will discover a path through 1,175 boxwoods to the center of the maze.

Edible Landscape Garden – Edible plants are featured, combining beauty and utility with a unique display of fruits, vegetables and herbs.
